One of the most refreshing trends we noticed at the 2009 Latin Alternative Music Conference was the surge of talented Dominican women artists including Grammy nominated singer song writer Alih Jey, Judy Santos and Marlyn Jimenez of Girlz Talk, Cristal Marie, and New York\\\'s own Maluca. The music of the Dominican Republic -- mainly merengue and bachata, but also Reggaeton and hip-hop -- is often dominated by men. Think about artists like Juan Luis Guerra, Fernando Villalona, Eddy Herrera, Sergio Vargas, Toño Rosario, Johnny Ventura or even younger performers like Aventura or Raulin Rodriguez, Zacarias Ferreira, Frank Reyes, El Chaval, Monchy y Alexandra, Andy Andy, Elvis Martinez, Joe Veras and Luis Vargas. Can you see the trend? And although many talented women musicians of Dominican heritage often accompany men on their hit records and songs, very few women have broken out as stars in their own right.
