Dennis De Leon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS, passed yesterday.  The cause, as reported to the New York Times by Bruce Kiernan, Mr. De Leon’s companion for 32 years, was heart failure.  Mr. De Leon had lived with the AIDS virus since 1986 and had weakened in recent years.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues at this most difficult time.

Dennis De Leon was a former New York City human rights commissioner who was one of the first city officials to announce that he was infected with the virus that causes AIDS at a time of great stigma.  He was a courageous leader and activist and had an unwavering commitment to the Latino community, creating educational and prevention programs not just for the gay Latino community, but for Latino women, immigrants and inmates.

Under his leadership (until a few months ago) the Latino Commission on AIDS grew from a staff of two to a staff of 45 and a budget of $5 million.  The LCA now works in partnership with 380 organizations nationwide.

The Board of the Latino Commission on AIDS issued the following statement:

"On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Latino Commission on AIDS, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our leader, friend and mentor, Dennis de Leon.  Dennis was a tireless human rights activist and an advocate for the Latino community in its fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and will be remembered for his passionate dedication to fighting the disease through his leadership of the Latino Commission on AIDS.  We will miss Dennis’ wisdom, commitment, charisma, and most importantly, his strong voice which promoted active advocacy and his loyalty to the Commission and its partners."

The Board also released information about services for Mr. De Leon this morning:
  • Viewing will take place at Redden’s Funeral Home at 325 West 14th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues on Wednesday, December 16th (4-9pm)
  • Mass will take place  Thursday, December 17th at the Parish of St. Joseph in Greenwich Village located at 371 Avenue of the Americas between Washington and Waverly Place (10am).
