Explosive, dynamic, sometimes disturbing, the art of Franck de Las Mercedes is a journey into the psyche of this thoughtful and engaging young man. Completely self-taught in visual arts, de Las Mercedes uses abstract expressionism, photography and collage to expose visions of his inner landscape and of the world around him.

Nicaraguan by birth, Franck and his family emigrated to New York in the eighties, fleeing the armed conflict in his native land. After working in theater and in music, he became intrigued by the possibilities of expression in visual arts, and began a project of self-education provided mostly by the New York Public Library, he quips. One can see a dialogue with Pollock, Rauschenberg, Kandinsky, and Warhol, but the themes and the results are entirely de Las Mercedes'.

He has already attracted a worldwide following with his Priority Boxes, a self-funded project where Franck responds to requests for peace, love, courage, or whatever the writer seeks, using a postal package as a medium for consideration by all who handle it. It is hard to believe that the same individual is also a fearless explorer of the darkest sides of humanity, as is evident in some of his collages and larger canvases.

My Latino Voice is proud to share our recent interviews with this talented young man. Those is the New York area can see some of de Las Mercedes' works in the exhibit "Running on Empty," opening Wednesday, July 14, from 6 to 9pm, in Chelsea, at 119 West 25th Street.
