George Torres has created quite an online following in New York City. Those who follow him on Twitter and Facebook, simply know him as the Urban Jibaro. He got started with a simple website in the late 90s called Sofrito for your Soul in an effort to connect Latinos to their culture. The website led him to create Sofrito Media Group, which includes Radio Capicu and Capicu Poetry & Cultural Showcase, which provides an outlet for spoken word and performing artists in New York City. Sofrito Media Group will also provide professional and networking events called "Social Sofrito". He is also the current NY Director for LATISM (Latinos in Social Media), the largest organization of Latino social media professionals (of which My Latino Voice is a member. ) Through his website, Facebook, Twitter, and radio show, the Urban Jibaro has created an international following, in places such as Australia and our troops stationed overseas.
While George is a social media enthusiast, his passion is reaching out to the community. Through his social media outlets, he has raised awareness for organizations such as Por Tu Familia/NYC Initiative, the American Diabetes Association, and the CASA ANA Project in the Dominican Republic.
My Latino Voice had a chance to speak with George Torres about the effects of social media among Latinos, his charity work and what it means to be Latino. To find out more about George "Urban Jibaro" Torres and Sofrito Media Group visit www.sofritomediagroup.com.
