My Latino Voice was privileged to speak with Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), about his important work and activism on behalf of many communities, his Latino roots and growing up in a Cuban-American household, his current Boricuban-American family, and what "Latino" means to him.

Jarrett joined GLAAD after serving nine years in the Massachusetts legislature and as the president of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. He was the first Latino and first openly gay man elected to the Massachusetts state Senate where he successfully advocated for upholding marriage equality.  Jarrett is the first of many firsts, including the first in his high school to go to Harvard, and we are proud to honor him as this week's "Featured Voice."

GLAAD works to build public support for LGBT equality by bringing the stories of LGBT people to millions of people through promoting and ensuring fair and accurate LGBT images in news, entertainment and social media.  For more information or to join, please visit www.glaad.org.
