Rose Arce is everything you'd expect a producer to be: sharp, a straight shooter, and keen observer. When she speaks, she can easily produce the perfect sound bite on any topic. But what's surprising about Arce, producer of CNN's Latino In America is her sensitivity and deep care for communities of color in the United States.
In fact, when Arce spoke to My Latino Voice, she revealed that the CNN documentary represents a long-held passion to tell the stories - inspiring or troubling - of the Latino experience. And who better than Arce, the daughter of Peruvian immigrants and who grew up in Virginia, to collect the voices of Latinos around the U.S.? It took someone like Arce, working alongside Soledad O'Brien, to find Latinos living in the unlikeliest of places such as Shenandoah, PA, and to ask them to share a snapshot of their lives. The result is a stunning, two-part documentary about the every-day realities Latino face in their communities.
Whether you watch the documentary, which airs on October 21st and 22nd, or buy the companion book to the series, you will walk away a smarter and fuller person for informing yourself about the issues. In the meantime, listen in as Arce tells My Latino Voice about her experience making the series:
Concha Buika (born 1972 in Palma de Mallorca) is a Spanish singer.
Her album Niña de Fuego is currently nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Buika's family is originally from Equatorial Guinea. She grew up in Mallorca among gypsies -- who imbued in her the traditional "cante" flamenco -- as the only person of African descent in her neighborhood.
